Saint Denis of Paris (San Dionisio de Paris)

Patron Saint of Barrio San Dionisio, Parañaque City, National Capital Region, Philippines

This is the only (if not, one of the few) Barrios in the Philippines who invoke him as Patron. According to the people of the Parañaque Viejo, Tata Dune (the locals’ nickname for San Dionisio) is a miraculous saint, especially well known for helping the sick. His visita (or chapel) was built during the Spanish Regime, and both the exterior and the interior of the chapel are still preserved up to the present.

I myself experienced his help several times already, whenever I experience some bodily pain/discomfort.

He is also one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers and he is one of the Patron Saints of Paris, France.

A Moment to Remember

This is for English 101 Class. This is our Synopsis of the movie that we watched in English 101 Class for the duration of the last week July 2011.

I. SYNOPSIS

What does one think about Romantic movies? Cheesy, too “Ordinary”, or perhaps maybe even boring? This movie, in fact, is neither of these.. we can describe it as an adventure, because it talks about crossing the barriers of society, in order to be with one’s true love. It is also tragic because the movie is about a young couple who is living a happy married life, which will suddenly be shattered due to a rare disease which starts to bring discomfort in their lives. But most of all, one can also describe it as a movie which can move the audience’s hearts, because the movie is also about carrying all those trials with heroic understanding and patience, all in the name of love.

The main characters in this movie are Su Jin and Chul Soo. Su Jin is a young woman who belongs to the middle class. She works as a fashion designer, and seems to be a Happy-go-lucky woman, waiting eagerly for the day that she’ll find her true love. Chul Soo, on the other hand, is somewhat a bit older than Su Jin, and is a carpenter. Unlike Su Jin, he is not financially stable, and his life is somewhat harsh, which is the reason why he has a strong-willed attitude.

The film starts in a convenience store called Family Mart wherein a woman named Su Jin accidentally meets a man named Chul Soo. They had a small misunderstanding over a can of soda which Su Jin mistakenly thought as the soda which she bought, and drank it. After that scene, it seems that as time goes by, Su Jin became more attracted to Chul Soo, and eventually, despite the social barriers (since Su Jin belongs to an upper-middle class family while Chul Soo is of the low-clas, and is orphaned by an old carpenter who doesn’t treat him well) and the fact that his father might oppose her decision to marry an “ordinary carpenter”, the two decided to marry.

After they got married, the two decided to live together, and we will eventually know how very caring Chul Soo is towards his wife, and how the two are very dedicated to their work. As the movie progresses through, Su Jin starts to become more forgetful, and eventually they would seek medical help.

The findings of the doctor would eventually reveal that Su Jin already has the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease, but Su Jin would not reveal it immediately to Chul Soo, but later on Chul Soo would also know Su Jin’s medical condition, when he himself consults the doctor because of the strange behavior that Su Jin shows for the past few days. And even though it is very heart-breaking for Chul Soo to know that his wife is starting to have Alzheimer’s Disease, yet he still continues to carry his cross, out of love for his wife.

As the end of the movie nears, we can see that the scenes become more dramatic, as the trials of the couple become more intense. The ending of the movie was when Chul Soo re-enacts the first time he and Su Jin met inside the Convenience Store, with all of the family members of both parties inside the store. Su Jin suddenly asks Chul Soo: “Is this heaven?” And the movie ends by a scene wherein they’re driving in the countryside and Chul Soo telling Su Jin “I love you.”

II. ILLUSTRATION

This is my illustration as to what the movie A Moment to Remember represents. I chose this picture because, as symbolized by the two Coke cans having a different color, there are differences between the background of Su Jin and Chul Soo. Su Jin came from an upper-middle class family, has a stable job, and a better life which makes her a happy-go-lucky person, while Chul Soo had an unhappy past after being turned over by his mother to a poor old carpenter who is very indifferent and doesn’t seem to care for him, which makes his attitude in life that of a strong, independent, hardworking man who does all he can to uplift and sustain himself, which can explain the very masculine and strong-willed attitude of Chul Soo.

But still, as symbolized by the two cans having the logo Coke, despite their differences, it is as if that they were destined to be together. No matter the differences, as long as you love somebody, still you would do everything just to please and love one other, and make each other’s lives more meaningful and happy, to the best that you can.

And although this is not in the picture, I also remember that before, in the commercials of Coke here in the Philippines, there was this phrase that would be uttered in the course of the commercial: “SHARE HAPPINESS.” It is as if this is also another message which was shown in the movie. The two were sharing all of their talents, time, effort, patience, understanding, and all of their joys and sorrows, whether in times of comfort or in the midst of difficulties, which made each other’s lives more meaningful and their married life more intimate. This paved the way for their relationship to be unshaken, despite their difficulties becoming more hard as the days go by, and which in the end, benefited the two of them, for they were able to prove how much they love each other, and brought indescribable happiness and consolation for both of them, and the assurance that their love would last forever.
